Thunder open AJHL playoffs with pair of wins

The Drayton Valley Thunder opened up their first round AJHL playoff matchup with the Bonnyville Pontiacs with back to back wins to take a 2-0 series lead.

In game one, it was a duel of goaltenders as the Thunder’s Eric Ward and Easton Hesse of Bonnyville were perfect through sixty minutes, sending the game to overtime tied 0-0.

Colson Gengenbach broke the stalemate and ended the game 3:57 into overtime for Drayton Valley, giving them a 1-0 lead in the series.

Game two was Sunday night in Bonnyville where Drayton Valley built off of game one to win 6-2.

Drayton scored four times in the first period, including two goals from Jeremy Klessens 18 seconds apart in the final minute of the period.

In the second period, Drayton Valley added two more powerplay goals from Kabe Bleay and Tanner Hopps to make it 6-0.

Bonnyville was able to score two goals of their own Lucas Thorne and Bruce MacGregor in the final two minutes of the period, but were unable to claw back to win game two.

The Thunder return home to the Drayton Valley Omniplex for game three Wednesday at 7 p.m..
