COURT UPDATE

Suspects in March 2019 murder in Grandview to be tried separately

Mar 2, 2020 | 2:44 PM

Two people charged in a Red Deer homicide last year will now have their charges dealt with separately.

On Feb. 28, a preliminary hearing was to take place in Red Deer provincial court for both Quentin Lee Strawberry, 38, and Jennifer Lee Caswell, 38, of Red Deer to see if their case has enough evidence to go to trial.

However, the Crown informed court on Friday that they wish to separate Caswell’s charges from Strawberry’s and have the two dealt with separately.

Both Caswell and Strawberry faces charges of second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm in the death of 45-year-old Joseph Junior Alfred Gallant on Mar. 29, 2019.

That’s when RCMP and Emergency Services attended a residence in Red Deer’s Grandview neighbourhood shortly after midnight and found a man with serious injuries. Mounties say the male was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries.

Caswell’s charges are now scheduled to be spoken to on Mar. 26, while Strawberry’s four-day preliminary hearing which began on Friday, will continue on Mar. 11.

Strawberry also faces charges of attempted murder, obstructing a peace officer, six counts of breach of conditions, and failing to comply with conditions in relation to another incident in downtown Red Deer last December while out on bail.

Strawberry has a preliminary hearing scheduled for that matter on May 22.
