RDC Kings topple Kodiaks for ACAC volleyball title

Feb 29, 2020 | 10:08 PM

The Red Deer College Kings are ACAC men’s volleyball champions once again.

Competing at the provincial championships at Lethbridge College this week, the Kings reclaimed the throne after two years out of the medals. It is the program’s 19th title dating back to 1981, and first since repeating in 2017.

They secured the title with a four-set win over the host Kodiaks on Saturday; 23-25, 25-19, 25-20, and 25-23.

“It really never gets old,” said Kings coach Aaron Schulha. “We’ve had a lot of success in our program, I was lucky enough to be part of a few as a player, we won a few over the last little while as coaches as well, but it’s a different journey every year with a different group. I’m just really, really proud of the way this group came along.”

For Lethbridge College, it is their second straight silver medal. For the Kings, it was their 13th consecutive win overall.

Patrick Toze, a fourth year RDC Kinesiology student from Brisbane, Australia, had 15 kills in the gold medal match and was named tournament MVP.

“It’s really something of beauty for us to come in and win,” said Toze. “We knew it was going to be such a tough game, they are an amazing team and to come into their home gym with the crowd, we knew it was going to be tough. But one of the big things was to stay together as a team and as a group of friends and we did that. I’m absolutely happy.”

The Kings’ Carter Hills and Tom Wass were named to the tournament all-star team. Wass was also player of the game for Red Deer on Saturday.

The Kings and Kodiaks, who are two of the top three ranked teams in the entire nation, both advance to the CCAA National Championship from March 11-14 in Fredericton, N.B.
