City hosting open houses for snow and ice control program

Feb 29, 2020 | 11:06 AM

The City of Red Deer is in the process of gathering public input for snow and ice removal programs.

An online survey launched Feb. 12 has already gathered over 500 responses, and a series of open houses starts this week: March 3 at the North Side Community Centre (6-8 p.m) and March 4 at Festival Hall (6-8 p.m.).

Greg Sikora, Public Works Manager, says his department has already looked at some of the feedback they’ve received.

“It has familiar trends and common themes, and that’s to be expected. But what we really want to be able to do is capture everyone’s voice. Not just a few people on Facebook or social media outlets, but really capture communities’ needs and with the changing weather conditions and the changing environment, we want to make sure that we’re dialed in, and in alignment with the community’s wants and needs,” he said regarding the upcoming open houses.

Sikora says his team does the best they can to keeps roads clear in light of ever-evolving weather conditions.

“We can only go from historical information. We know that in any given year, we get about 135 centimeters of snow. What’s coming in to play now is really the ‘freeze/thaw cycles’. Who would’ve thought that the 28th of February, we’re well above zero three days in a row following January where we had almost record lows.”

Now that we’re in those freeze and thaw cycles, Sikora says it’s become less of a plowing issue, and more of a traction-control issue.

Two more open houses are scheduled for March 24 at Notre Dame High School and March 25 at the Golden Circe.
