“The Torch be Ours”

Veer to share lessons learned touring Holocaust sites

Members of the public are invited to attend as Mayor Tara Veer shares what she learned during her 10-day tour of sites from the Holocaust.

“The Torch be Ours: From Compassion to Action 2019 Holocaust Delegation” is the theme of Veer’s presentation she will deliver at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery on March 4, 2020, at 7p.m.

Veer’s intensive and educational 10-day journey through Berlin, Krakow and Israel was as part of a delegation of law enforcement, government and education leaders from across Canada. Leaders returned from the delegation empowered to counter antisemitism, hate and promote Holocaust education following the trip.

“In these politically turbulent times, it is more important than ever to understand the events of the Holocaust so that we can all take a stand against racism and discrimination,” says Lorna Johnson, Red Deer MAG Executive Director. “We are very grateful that Mayor Veer has agreed to share her experience with us.”

This presentation is part of the events and programs occurring while the travelling exhibition Anne Frank – A History for Today is on display at the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery. The exhibition from the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam and is on display at the MAG until March 22.

Museum officials say the exhibit aims to bring Anne’s life story to the attention of people all over the world to encourage them to reflect on the dangers of anti-Semitism, racism and discrimination and the importance of freedom, equal rights and democracy.

As part of this exhibit the MAG will be showing artworks created by Red Deer high school students.

The exhibition tells the story of Anne Frank set against the background of the Holocaust. The exhibition makes use of images from the Frank family and quotations from the Diary of Anne Frank. Each panel displays information about the most important developments of that time: the rise of National Socialism, the Second World War and the persecution of the Jews.

This exhibition has three artefacts that visitors will be able to see: a replica of the Diary of Anne Frank, a Yellow Star of David, a 3D model of the Anne Frank House and a Nazi program from 1935-1936.
