Tree removal in preparation for work at the G.H. Dawe Community Centre

Feb 26, 2020 | 10:34 AM

A section of trees will be removed from the grove on the north side of the G.H. Dawe Community Centre in preparation for underground utility work. Tree removal is scheduled to take place Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28.

Approximately 0.4 acres of trees will be removed from the G.H. Dawe Community Centre grounds in order to prepare the site for coming underground utility work. In adherence with the Migratory Birds Act, trees are being removed now, before nesting season begins. The trees must be removed before underground utility construction can begin. If grant funding is approved in time, the utility construction will take place this summer.

In preparation for future facility expansion, underground utility work is required to realign the existing high-pressure gas line, water and wastewater sewer lines, and cable and telephone lines. Completing underground utility work in advance of the facility expansion will optimize the warm construction season for facility construction, reducing the amount of winter construction and thus reducing associated costs and risks.

Tree stumps will be removed at a later date, once the ground has thawed. To accommodate for the trees lost, The City will make a financial contribution to a Public Reserve Trust Fund aimed at protecting and enhancing green spaces in other areas of the city.
