A total of seven Red Deer College Kings & Queens Volleyball players were recognized at their respective Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship Awards Banquet on Wednesday.

In Medicine Hat, Emma Letkeman of the Queens was named the ACAC Women’s Volleyball South Rookie of the Year.

Letkeman, a first-year setter, impressively ranked third in the league with 8.64 assists per set. The student-athlete from Victoria totaled 570 assists, 84 digs, 19 service aces and 18 blocks, and her contributions were significant.

“Emma is very deserving of the award. Not too often you see a first-year setter come in and be part of a 21-3 record,” says Queens Head Coach Talbot Walton. “She can set the ball from all over the court and get it to the spot where the hitters can hit.”

Letkeman, Emma Holmes, Alexandria Greenshields and Kaylee Domoney were celebrated as ACAC South All-Conference selections. All four student-athletes played important roles helping the RDC Queens (21-3) finish second in the south division this season.

The RDC Queens will compete at the ACAC Championship from Feb. 27-29 at Medicine Hat College. Their opening match is against the Lakeland College Rustlers on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 8:00 pm.

In Lethbridge, Carter Hills of the Kings was announced as the ACAC Men’s Volleyball South Rookie of the Year.

Hills, a Bachelor of Education Science student, stepped into the Kings lineup and made an impact in his first year. The six-foot-two outside hitter led the RDC Kings in kills (255), kills per set (3.11), service aces (36) and aces per set (0.44). Hills, who is from Legal, Alberta added 102 digs and 25 blocks to his resume.

“Carter has been an outstanding first-year and I’m glad that other coaches are noticing. He’s really solidified our lineup and created some balance. It’s always nice to have a left-handed guy on the right side,” says Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha. “He is super athletic, has that pop on his arm and can be a difference maker from the service line as well.’

Mark DeWit and Tom Wass joined Hills on the ACAC South All-Conference team. All three Kings helped guide the team (20-4) to second place in the south and capping off the season with ten consecutive match victories.

The RDC Queens will compete at the ACAC Championship from Feb. 27-29 at Medicine Hat College. Their opening match is against the Lakeland College Rustlers on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 8:00 pm.

The RDC Kings will play The King’s University Eagles on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 1:00 pm in their first match of the ACAC Championship. The Lethbridge College Kodiaks are hosting the event.
