Winter Sports Day at École Barrie Wilson

Feb 25, 2020 | 4:16 PM

École Barrie Wilson Elementary School kicked off their annual Winter Sports Day on Wednesday.

The event is designed to get students out of the classroom for the day and try a bunch of events.

Students are able to try their hand at curling (using medicine balls), tobogganing, sledge hockey, relay races and more.

“In the lead up to the Canada Winter Games in Red Deer, we started to sort of plan our winter sports day and it always had a Canada Winter games feel to it,” said Chris Good, principal at Barrie Wilson. “We developed a lot of activities that were fun and somehow linked to one of the Winter Games activities. Now it’s like a legacy of the games.

Good says there’s an added nice touch behind having sledge hockey as one of their activities.

“We do have students in our school (where) regular skating is hard for them, so we want to give them the opportunity to really shine at school,” he explained. “We partner with the paralympic sports association and bring in sledges so all the students in the school can get the chance to try and see what it’s like for people who maybe can’t do regular skating. The kids really like it, it’s a great experience.”

Another event the school had for the students was “schlocky.” A game where players use sticks without blades and battle to get a puck through a hole the size of it, while taking on other opponents.

“One of our focus areas is student wellness and our phys-ed teacher always says ‘outside is the best side’ and she really wants to encourage kids to not just be active but be active outside,” says Good. “For us, it is important to have a day like today where the kids can get outside and try different things and maybe see different ways to have fun outside.”
