Wranglers win pair in extra time over Vipers to start playoff series

The Red Deer Vipers and Sylvan Lake Wranglers are in the midst of a heated first round series in the HJHL playoffs which Sylvan leads 2-0. Both games have required more than sixty minutes.

Game one saw the Wranglers win 7-6 in double overtime at the Servus Arena.

Red Deer jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Sylvan Lake tied it 2-2 through 20 minutes.

The Wranglers took a 3-2 lead in the second before the Vipers stormed out to a 6-4 lead through two periods.

Sylvan Lake scored twice in the third period to force extra time, with Brett Westin scoring the 6-6 goal for the Wranglers with 46 seconds remaining.

Westin then added the game winner 5:26 into the second overtime period.

The Wranglers followed up by winning game two Sunday at the NexSource Centre in Sylvan Lake, 5-4 in overtime.

Red Deer opened the scoring 3:12 into the game when Justin Paarup stole the puck while killing a penalty, and scored a shorthanded goal.

Red Deer scored again 15:24 in when the other Paarup brother, Jace scored to make it 2-0 for the Vipers. The goal was assisted by Tanner Scott and Keaton Sawicki.

The Vipers extended the lead to 3-0 22 seconds into the second period when Cole Hardman scored from Elijah Johanson and Tristin Zarubiak.

Sylvan Lake got onto the board in the second period when Westin put one home to make it 3-1.

Red Deer answered back when Jace Paarup scored again to make it 4-1 with a powerplay goal. After that it was all Sylvan.

The Wranglers turned up the heat with four unanswered goals to finish regulation play. The first came in the last minute of the second period when Payton Wright scored to make it 4-2.

Sylvan Lake added two goals in the third, at the 11:03 mark from Caileb Berge then with 2:31 left to play from Dayton Playford

In overtime, all it took was 1:27 for Berge to score his second of the game and win it for the Wranglers.

Game three of the best-of-seven goes Wednesday at 8 p.m. at Servus Arena.
