Weekend Recap: Feb. 21-22

RED DEER- It was a competitive and entertaining weekend in RDC Athletics. The Queens Basketball team picked up a pair of crucial victories against the Ambrose University Lions. The Basketball Kings split their series with the Lions, which included a resounding home decision. Both volleyball squads earned two match wins against the visiting Medicine Hat College Rattlers. The Red Deer College Kings Hockey team downed the Briercrest College Clippers twice in Saskatchewan and the Hockey Queens split their series with the NAIT Ooks, giving fans a preview of the semi-finals.

Here is a summary of what happened:

Queens Basketball | Friday, Feb. 21 | Ambrose University

The RDC Queens rode a 27 point third quarter and defeated the Ambrose University Lions 77-51. Britney Peters led the way with 18 points and ten rebounds in Calgary. Harneet Sidhu added 16 points.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, Feb. 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens (10-9) earned a dominant 73-35 victory over the Lions (3-16) at RDC. Peters had another great outing, totaling 17 points, seven rebounds, four steals and a block. Sandra Garcia-Bernal became the Queens all-time steals leader (148).

“Sandra plays hard every game. She is the ultimate competitor and brings a lot of that fire to the team, which as a coach you always appreciate,” said Queens Head Coach Mandy Botham. “She is one of the top defensive, if not the best defensive player in the league, and it was really great to see her break that record, and to do it in only three years.”

The Queens sit fifth in the south with 20 points and have to win their final two contests. Third seed Lethbridge College (12-9) has 24 points, but RDC won the season series 2-1. The Medicine Hat College Rattlers (11-10) are fourth with 22 points and are in the playoffs, as hosts.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Feb. 21 | Ambrose University

The Red Deer College Kings dropped a 106-90 road decision to the Ambrose University Lions. Fifth-year Spencer Klassen led RDC with 22 points. Tyronn King had 21.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Feb. 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings had a consistent effort and defeated the Lions 103-77. Anthony Harper, a fourth-year Business Administration General student, recorded ten points and ten rebounds in the win. Tyronn King dropped 33 points.

Heading into the final two regular season games, the RDC Kings (9-10), Briercrest College Clippers (9-10) and St. Mary’s University Lightning (9-10) share the fourth and final playoff spot in the south with 18 points.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Feb. 21 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Queens swept the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (25-16, 25-15 and 25-20). Erin Neufeldt accumulated 13 kills, eight digs, one stuff block and an ace. Tess Pearman added 11 kills.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, Feb. 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens (21-3) defeated the Rattlers (8-16) in the last match before the playoffs (25-19, 25-16 and 25-21). Neufeldt led the offensive charge again with 14 kills. Emma Holmes had ten. Kaylee Domoney contributed nine digs, totaling 1,005 in her Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) career.

“That’s just a huge number of digs when you think about that being accomplished in four seasons. Got to give a tremendous amount of respect to the effort that she puts in and the passion she has for that position,” said Queens Head Coach Talbot Walton. “She gives us something that we can build off of, trust that she’s going to be there and get those digs.”

Domoney’s contributions go beyond statistics.

“From a leadership standpoint and competitiveness, you’re not going to find a better teammate than that,” explained Walton. “She leads by example every single day in practice. I think she is a good key piece for the culture of Queens Volleyball.”

The Red Deer College Queens (21-3) will face the Lakeland College Rustlers (18-6) in their opening match at the ACAC Women’s Volleyball Championship on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 8:00 p.m.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Feb. 21 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Kings earned a four set home victory over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (25-14, 22-25, 25-16 and 25-22). Six-foot-four outside hitter Patrik Toze powered the RDC offence with 21 kills. First-year Carter Hills had 16. Setter Thomas Wass contributed 43 assists.

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, Feb. 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings swept the Rattlers (25-17, 25-12 and 25-12). Hills totaled 13 kills. Red Deer’s Ben Holmes had ten and Toze added nine.

The Kings (20-4) finished second in the south and will face The King’s University Eagles (16-8), who wrapped up third in the north, in the opening match of the ACAC Championship. The first serve between the two squads will take place on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 1 p.m. in Lethbridge.

The RDC Kings have won ten consecutive matches to finish the regular season and have momentum on their side as they enter the postseason.

“We are playing at a pretty high level especially after today (Saturday), so it’s more about getting guys a little more healthy, keeping some guys healthy and just making sure that we’re focused on the right things, preparing for our opponent,” said Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha. “If we look after our side, the results should look after themselves.”

Queens Hockey | Friday, Feb. 21 | NAIT

The Red Deer College Queens defeated the NAIT Ooks 2-1 in Edmonton. Airdrie’s Ashley Sutherland scored in regulation and the shootout winner. Queens goaltender Madison Fox made 38 saves (0.974).

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Feb. 22 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens were downed 3-1 by the visiting Ooks, which included an empty netter. Third-year forward Jenessa Fournier tallied for RDC. Fifth-year goaltender Karlee Fetch made 14 saves in her final ACAC regular season contest.

RDC (15-6-3-0) wrapped up second in the league. The Queens will host the third place Ooks (13-9-2-0) on Friday, Feb. 28 at 8 p.m. in the best-of-three semi-final series. The RDC Queens and NAIT Ooks will play game two on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Edmonton. If necessary, the series will be decided on Sunday, March 1 at 5 p.m. at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Feb. 21 | Briercrest College

Goaltender Nathan Alalouf and the Red Deer College Kings blanked the Briercrest College Clippers 7-0. Alalouf turned aside 24 shots. Lynnden Pastachak, Tyrell Mappin, Chance Longhjohn, Donovan Lumb and Carter Wolski scored singles. Sylvan Lake’s Chase Thudium added a pair.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Feb. 22 | Briercrest College

A shorthanded goal from Lloydminster’s Austin Hunter with 1:26 left in the third period, helped the RDC Kings topple the Clippers 4-3 in an afternoon rematch. Mathieu Lapointe, Dylan Thudium and Scott Ferguson also struck for the Kings. RDC goaltender Arik Weersink made 30 saves.

The Red Deer College Kings (19-5-2-0) remain second in the league and cannot catch first place NAIT (23-3-0-0). MacEwan University (19-6-1-0) is third and one point behind RDC.

Two games remain in the regular season against the SAIT Trojans.
