The Red Deer Optimist Chiefs were swept in the first round of the AMHL playoffs by the Calgary Northstars over the weekend.

The two teams met for game one of a five game series on February 18 at Servus Arena. Red Deer had home ice advantage for the series after finishing 11 points ahead of the Northstars during the regular season.

The Northstars held the Chiefs scoreless through the first two periods, eventually beating them 4-1. Mark Janes had the only goal for Red Deer.

Game two went Thursday in Calgary as the Chiefs looked to even up the series. Ty Daneault scored the only goal for the Chiefs late in the first period to tie the game heading into the first intermission. However, Red Deer was held off the scoresheet for the rest of the game, losing 3-1.

In a do-or-die game three, the Optimist Chiefs returned to Servus Arena with their backs against the wall on Saturday. The Northstars jumped out to an early lead scoring three unanswered goals in the first period. Red Deer answered back when Kyle Wallace scored in the second period then added two more in the third from Ben Perreault and Foxx Doell, but Calgary countered it with two of their own. The Northstars won game three 5-3 and swept the best-of-five 3-0.

In the other first round matchups, Sherwood Park and Fort Saskatewan are tied at two games apiece, Edmonton CAC Gregg Distributors and Loydminster are also tied heading to a game five, while Lethbridge swept Okotoks.

The Northstars are expected to play the Calgary Buffaloes in the second round.
