Snow removal and ice control update

Feb 21, 2020 | 9:50 AM

Snow Removal in Residential Zones Continues This Week

Town of Ponoka winter operations crews plan to continue snow removal operations on residential roadways this week in the North end of Ponoka, including the Co-op Subdivision area (Zone 2), as well as in Riverside (Zone 4) and in Lucas Heights (Zone 1). Snow removal will also continue over the coming weeks in Central Zone (Zone 3) and in all residential zones until completed – see attached Zones Map.

Temporary Parking Bans

Temporary parking bans are being implemented with ‘No Parking – Snow Removal’ signs being placed along Priority Routes and on residential roadways approximately 24 hours prior to snow removal operations beginning on each affected street. Citizens are asked to please move parked cars from the roadway during these temporary parking bans which allows for more effective and efficient snow removal, and saves time and money on snow clearing operations. Moving parked vehicles when parking bans are implemented is a requirement under Town bylaws.

Winter operations crews have been removing snow from all residential zones in Ponoka throughout the winter. The residential snow removal schedule is dependent on environmental conditions and new weather events which can require crews to redirect attention back to Priority 1 and 2 Routes (see attached Priority Routes Map) which include high-volume roads such as emergency, school bus and connector routes.

Town crews strive to minimize the amount of snow placed in driveways during plowing of residential streets, however residents may on occasion be required to clear access to their driveways.

Salting and Sanding Roadways

Town crews are also continuing to salt and sand roadways as needed. To report an icy intersection that may need attention, please contact the Town at 403-783-4431.

Town winter operations crews work in conjunction with the Alberta Ministry of Transportation, which is responsible for snow and ice control on Highways 2A and 53 in Ponoka.

Residents Asked to Clear Snow and Ice from Sidewalks

Ponoka residents are reminded to please keep all sidewalks that border their property clear of snow and ice. Keeping residential sidewalks shoveled helps protect people from slipping and falling. Keeping sidewalks adjacent to your home shoveled is also a requirement under Town bylaws.

Town of Ponoka snow clearing and ice control operations are conducted according to the Town’s Snow Removal and Ice Control Policy, and are kept within the Town’s annual snow removal budget which is based on average winter snowfall conditions over the past 10 years and is approved by Town Council.
