Visit from ‘The Bachelor’ contestant a fun highlight of Rebels B.C. road trip

The Red Deer Rebels returned home from their five game road trip through British Columbia early Tuesday morning.

They picked up two wins to close out the road trip against Kelowna and Prince George after dropping the first three games.

“I thought we showed some really good signs,” said Rebels captain Ethan Sakowich. “The first three games, obviously we were up in those games and lost in the third period. Those are things we have to clean up. The last two games I thought we played really well, more complete games. It was nice to end the trip on a more positive note.”

Through the first four games of the road trip, the Rebels and their opponents were tied heading into the third. In the first three, the Rebels were unable to get a win but turned things around against Kelowna.

“I thought we could have won all five games but breakdowns in the third cost us the first three games,” said forward Zak Smith. “In the last two we just tidied things up and played full sixties and we won those games.”

A highlight of the trip was a special guest who came to the Feb. 12 game in Vancouver. The team took a shot in the dark reached out on Twitter to see if Mykenna Dorn, a recent contestant on The Bachelor, wanted to come to the game. A few Rebels players are big fans of the show, apparently, and much to their delight she accepted the invite.

“She was a contestant and some of the guy’s favorite from the start. Merrick (Sutter) tweeted at her asking if she wanted to come to the game. She ended up coming, to all of our surprise. We got some pics with her after the game, it was pretty cool,” said a grinning Sakowich.

“I saw her when we were on the ice for the intermission, the break at ten minutes or whatever, and saw her on the jumbotron so that was pretty cool. Then after the game… she’s waiting outside to talk to us so it was crazy,” beamed Smith. “A couple of the guys are big bachelor fans. Sako and Douggie (Chris Douglas) kind of got me into it. We usually have a crew of six or seven that like to watch it together.”

“I started watching when I was 15 with my billet mom and same thing, I thought it was a dumb show but got into it, got addicted and brought it along. I think some of the guys have the same story. Team bonding,” explained Sakowich.

The Rebels will enjoy a few days off before the Tri-City Americans come to the Westerner Park Centrium Saturday night. Puck drops at 7 p.m., you can listen live on 106.7 The Drive.
