Input needed on auto insurance reform in Alberta

The Government of Alberta is asking for your thoughts on what the province’s automobile insurance system should look like.

They launched their review in the fall of 2019, which sought to address “pressing issues such as escalating costs and to develop solutions that will ensure affordable, accessible, and sustainable auto insurance options for the long term,” according to a media release from the province.

Automobile Insurance Advisory Committee Chair Chris Daniel says a survey is now up, seeking input from the public.

“As we review Alberta’s automobile insurance system, we are asking Albertans, service providers, and other relevant stakeholders to be part of the potential solution. A thorough understanding of consumer and industry needs will help ensure our recommendations to the government are realistic and reflective of the marketplace as a whole.”

The government claims that Albertans pay the third-highest rates for auto insurance in the country behind B.C. and Ontario.

The Automobile Insurance Rate Board approved rate hikes that saw some providers increase their prices by as much as 30 per cent at the start of 2020.

The survey is open until March 6 and can be accessed online here.

A three-member committee is expected to give its recommendations to the government this June.
