Weekend Recap: Feb. 15-16

This past week the RDC Kings Volleyball team downed the Briercrest College Clippers twice. The Volleyball Queens split their weekend series, which included handing the Clippers their first loss of the season. The Red Deer College Kings Hockey team defeated the Portage College Voyageurs in a pair of home games. The Hockey Queens picked up a point against the MacEwan University Griffins.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Feb. 14 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens earned a four set decision over the previously undefeated Briercrest College Clippers (23-25, 25-22, 25-21 and 25-22). Tess Pearman had 18 kills. Red Deer’s Emma Holmes and Calgary’s Erin Neufeldt added 12 each.

The second place RDC Queens (19-3) dropped the match to the top seed Clippers (21-1) in four sets (25-16, 23-25, 22-25 and 15-25). Both Pearman and Holmes had 11 kills. Libero Kaylee Domoney contributed 12 digs and two assists. The Queens have qualified for the playoffs.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Feb. 14 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Kings earned a five set home victory against the Briercrest College Clippers (25-10, 20-25, 25-21, 28-30 and 15-4). Setter Thomas Wass stacked up 49 assists, seven digs, six kills, three aces and one stuff block. Carter Hills fired 21 kills. Patrik Toze added 17.

The Kings (18-4) defeated the Clippers (14-8) in straight sets (25-16, 25-17 and 25-18) for their eighth consecutive win. Middle Cody Boulding finished with four kills, three stuff blocks and a pair of digs. Libero JJ Graham, a second-year Business Administration General Management student, accumulated nine digs and five assists.

“It was one of our most complete matches that I can remember. Nice to see,” said Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha. “I thought we controlled a lot of that match.”

The RDC Kings share top spot in the south with the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (18-4). The Kings have sealed a berth in the postseason.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Feb. 15 | MacEwan University

The Red Deer College Queens were blanked 3-0 by the MacEwan University Griffins in Edmonton. RDC goaltender Karlee Fetch played well and made 41 saves.

Queens Hockey | Sunday, Feb. 16 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a rare Sunday afternoon contest, the Queens (14-5-3-0) battled hard but were shaded 4-3 by the top seed Griffins (21-3-0-0) in double-overtime. RDC earned a point in the standings. Ashley Sutherland, Madison Sansom and Avery Lajeunnesse scored for the Queens. It was Sansom’s first goal in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC). Fetch stopped 33 shots.

The second place RDC Queens have a two-game set remaining against the third seed NAIT Ooks (12-9-1-0) next weekend. The teams will also meet in the semi-finals.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Feb. 14 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Kings scored a trio of third period goals and earned a 5-3 victory over the Portage College Voyageurs. Chase Thudium, Mathieu Lapointe, Dylan Thudium, Ryley Smith and Jacob Wozney tallied for RDC. Kings goalie Arik Weersink, a Business Administration Marketing student, made 16 saves.

Chase Thudium scored twice, including the game-winner as the Kings downed the Voyageurs 7-6 in overtime. Wozney, Lynnden Pastachak, Scott Ferguson, Austin Hunter and Boedy Donald also found the back of the net. Donald’s marker was his first in the ACAC. Weersink turned aside 29 shots.

The second place Kings (17-5-2-0) have four regular season games left and have already qualified to compete in the playoffs.
