Four-year-old Red Deer boy fighting brave battle with leukemia

A 4-year-old Red Deer boy is in the fight of his life right now at Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton.

In September, Daxton Schlosser was diagnosed with acute leukemia. He has since undergone chemotherapy in order to get the disease under control.

“In the first week, the nurses had labelled him a rockstar. He will take any poke and any sort of pain like a champ,” says Jacey Schlosser, Daxton’s mom. “Unfortunately he has to take a lot of oral meds which is like wresting an alligator in the dark, but he’s extremely tough, and has been super resilient. He’s always smiling, keeping the nurses on their toes and telling them to get back to work.”

Following an early bone marrow transplant, Daxton’s disease went into remission, and has stayed that way since. However, childhood cancer can relapse fairly easily, so the family remains hopeful it stays that way.

Schlosser says doctors have given the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Batman fan a 70 per cent chance at permanent remission, but he must remain on his current treatment of chemotherapy for three years.

The family has spent most of their time at Ronald McDonald House while in Edmonton, including dad Kyle and 8-year-old big sister Khloe who has been Daxton’s best friend through it all.

“Advocate for your children,” Schlosser adds as a message to other parents experiencing a similar fight. “Be their voice because they cannot do it themselves. You do have to be very involved.”

To date, a GoFundMe has raised more than $7000 to help Daxton and his family.
