Alberta Winter Games to feature 150+ central Alberta athletes

More than 150 athletes from in and around Red Deer are set to compete at the 2020 Alberta Winter Games.

The Games kick off next Friday, Feb. 14 at venues in the Airdrie region, but one event is happening this weekend in Red Deer.

Canyon Ski Resort is the home for the U14 alpine skiing and ski cross events, an event Alberta Alpine and Freestyle Alberta are helping to host. Other ski hills in the Airdrie area weren’t available over the Family Day long weekend.

Events go Friday, Saturday and Sunday until about 2 p.m. with Alberta Games medals on the line, including ice hockey.

Eight members of the Red Deer Chiefs Bantam Elite team will be representing, including Emma Brooks, Ryann Holbein and Sydney Hollman for Zone 2, Belle Smith and Lilly Howell for Zone 3, Hailey Jackson and Calleja Mission for Zone 4, and Alyssa Shaw for Zone 7.

Once the Games officially begin, sports will include archery, gymnastics, ice hockey, badminton, curling and fencing, just to name a few.
