Poachers fined $2,000 for illegally fishing walleye from Sylvan Lake

EDMONTON- Two men have been fined $2,000 each and been suspended from fishing for one year after they were found with walleye caught from Sylvan Lake.

Alberta Fish and Wildlife says the pair were nabbed by wildlife officers doing angling checks on the lake last September.

One of the men dumped a black garbage bag overboard, but officers retrieved it and found four walleye and a large rock inside the bag.

Both men admitted to catching and retaining two walleye each.

Liubomyr Bioko and Orest Osinchuk pleaded guilty to exceeding the possession limit of fish.

Bioko also pleaded guilty to obstructing an official in the performance of his duties and received an additional $1000 fine.

Sylvan Lake has a zero limit for walleye and northern pike.

Populations of both species need to recover, and unlawful harvest of fish can have a negative effect.
