Pearman and Wass named RDC Athletes of the Week

A pair of volleyball players have been named the Red Deer College Athletics Bedford Food Company Athletes of the Week.

Queens outside hitter Tess Pearman had a magnificent weekend on the court, helping her team down the SAIT Trojans in back-to-back contests.

In Friday’s three set sweep (25-23, 25-17 and 25-19), the Bachelor of Education Elementary student contributed nine kills, ten digs, two stuff blocks and one service ace in Calgary. She also contributed 12 points in the match, which tied teammate McKenna Olson for the game-high.

At the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on Saturday, Pearman was a significant force, helping guide the RDC Queens to a four set victory (25-16, 20-25, 25-15 and 25-13) and earning their 16^th consecutive win.

The talented student-athlete from Ponoka totaled 16 kills, eight digs, two aces, one stuff block and finished with a 0.419 hitting percentage. In addition, Pearman accumulated 19 points for the Queens, which drew even with Emma Holmes for the highest amount.

Over seven sets, the second-year player averaged 3.57 kills per set – ranking seventh in the league with 2.78 kills per set. This year Pearman has stacked up 136 kills, 82 digs, 16 blocks and 13 aces.

As the season has progressed, she is described as having elevated her game and been a key student-athlete guiding the RDC Queens (16-2) to second place in the south and second highest winning percentage (0.889) in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Volleyball.

Meanwhile, setter Thomas Wass made an impact this past weekend as the Red Deer College Kings (14-4) defeated the first place SAIT Trojans twice.

Wass, who is from Adelaide, Australia, was effective distributing the ball to a variety of RDC offensive weapons. The third-year totaled 40 assists, nine digs, four kills, one ace and one stuff block in Friday’s four set road victory (25-22, 18-25, 25-23 and 25-16).

Then in Saturday’s sweep (25-20, 25-22 and 25-22) at home, the Bachelor of Arts student accumulated 33 assists, seven kills, four digs and a pair of service aces. In seven sets, Wass averaged 10.43 assists per set.

Wass – a third-year player, currently leads the league with 9.11 assists per set and over 18 matches this season, the six-foot-two student-athlete has amassed 583 assists, 93 digs, 36 kills, 21 blocks and 14 service aces.
