RDC Queens edge NAIT in ACAC hockey action

The Red Deer College Queens hockey team defeated the NAIT Ooks in a tight game Friday night where the two teams came in tied in the ACAC standings.

With goals from Jessa Fournier, Sydney Rowley and Camryn Wallan, the Queens won 3-2 to move into second place in the league standings.

RDC head coach Kelly Coulter said it was a full team effort on the ice tonight that got them the win.

“It’s little detail things we said we got away from against Grant Mac (in two losses last weekend) and we focused on them this week. It was nice to see the little things we practiced they executed and I think when we do execute them they are successful.”

Special teams were huge in the game with four of the five goals in the game coming on the man advantage, two by each team.

“Our power play, I thought we did a good job of moving the puck rather than skating the puck and just getting to that net area and creating traffic, Cam’s (Wallan) goal is a perfect example of that. They got their head up and shot.” said Coulter.

“Penalty kill we got to do a better job protecting the house. They’re a team with some heavy shots so we have to be aware of that. That’s an area for us to look at tomorrow and make some adjustments.”

The game was fairly physical from the initial puck drop, with the two teams battling to gain that all important extra inch that could get them the win. The referee let the teams play with 16 penalty minutes handed out on the night.

“Any time when the refs are involved in the games as long as it’s consistent, I though he did a good job tonight. There is contact allowed and he allowed that to go,” Coulter shared. “I though he did a good job letting the girls skate and figure it out. All the penalties he called we’re legitimate penalties.”

The RDC Queens hit the ice again tomorrow at NAIT for the rematch.
