LOTS OF FEEDBACK!

Over 2,000 respond to survey on Molly Banister Drive extension

Jan 14, 2020 | 3:12 PM

A City of Red Deer official says they received about 2,000 online and mail-in responses for its survey on the future of Molly Banister Drive.

The survey, which closed on Monday, was prompted by a proposed amendment to the Municipal Development Plan and East Hill Area Structure Plan. Both documents include a future extension of Molly Banister Drive to the east to connect to 22 Street.

Melcor Developments Ltd. has begun planning a development for that piece of land and wants the extension removed from both documents for planning and environmental reasons.

Senior Planner Christi Fidek says it’s one of the highest response rates they’ve ever had to consultation for a project.

“Because it’s shown in the plans as an arterial road it has an impact on many different vehicle users within the city,” she highlights. “As well, because it (affects) a large natural area it’s a unique property within the city.”

Now that the survey is closed, Fidek says the next step is for city staff to determine whether additional information or data is needed. They’ll also be responding to various questions received through survey responses before determining the next steps in the process.

“It will take a considerable amount of time to go through all the comments,” she says in light of the heavy feedback they received. “We will be going through comment one by one.”

A recommendation is expected to be presented to city council for consideration during the second quarter of this year.
