Weekend recap: Jan. 10-11

RED DEER- The RDC Queens Volleyball team won both matches handily over the Lethbridge College Kodiaks.

The Volleyball Kings split their weekend series with the Kodiaks.

The Red Deer College Kings Hockey team played two close contests against the MacEwan University Griffins, earning one point in the standings.

The Hockey Queens pulled within a pair of goals of the league leading MacEwan University Griffins, but couldn’t climb the standings.

Here is a summary of what happened this past weekend:

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Jan. 10 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Queens defeated the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in three sets (25-16, 25-17 and 25-12). It was the Queens’ 11th win in a row. Ponoka’s Tess Pearman contributed nine kills for RDC. The Collegiate Sports Medicine Queens Player-of-the-Game added four service aces, three digs and one stuff block.

The second place Red Deer College Queens (12-2) swept the Kodiaks (2-12) in straight sets (25-15, 25-21 and 25-19), winning their 12th consecutive match. Emma Holmes was named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Queens Player-of-the-Game, leading both sides with ten kills.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Jan. 10 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Kings controlled the Lethbridge College Kodiaks in three sets (25-22, 25-20 and 25-18). Carter Hills was the named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Kings Player-of-the-Game. The six-foot- two outside hitter racked up a match leading 12 kills, along with seven digs, one stuff and one assist.

The third place Kings (10-4) dropped a three set decision to the (11-3) Kodiaks (23-25, 20-25 and 15-25). Zak Hallworth was recognized as the Collegiate Sports Medicine Kings Player-of-the-Game with strong defensive play.

Queens Hockey | Friday, Jan. 10 | MacEwan University

The MacEwan University Griffins earned a 5-3 home result over the RDC Queens. Sydney Rowley, Jenessa Fournier and Ashley Sutherland scored for the Queens. RDC goaltenders Karlee Fetch and Madison Fox dealt with 48 shots.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Jan. 11 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The second place Queens (9-4-1-0) fell 2-0 to the league leading Griffins (13-3-0-0) at RDC. Queens netminder Madison Fox was tremendous and gave her team a chance, making 23 saves. She was named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Queens Player-of-the-Game.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Jan. 10 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The MacEwan University Griffins scored late and added an empty net goal, solidifying a 4-2 road decision over RDC. Scott Ferguson scored both goals for the Kings, including one on the power play. He was also named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Kings Player-of-the-Game.

In Edmonton, the Griffins (11-5-0-0) edged the second place Kings (12-2-2-0) by a score of 4-3 in three-on-three double overtime. RDC picked up one point. Mathieu Lapointe scored a pair and Austin Hunter added a single. Kings goalie Nathan Alalouf made 42 saves.
