Rebels doubled up by Wheat Kings as road swing hits Manitoba

Jan 11, 2020 | 12:52 PM

Each period had one goal Friday night when the Red Deer Rebels visited Westoba Place for a matchup against the Brandon Wheat Kings.

Unfortunately for the road team, only one of the tallies was theirs as they went on to lose by a score of 2-1.

Red Deer is now 1-2 this season versus Brandon, the home team winning each game. They play one final time Jan. 29 at the Westerner Park Centrium.

The teams were at each other’s throats early, with coinciding cross-checking and roughing calls being made just 37 seconds in. Each team had one more minor penalty in the frame before Luka Burzan buried his team-leading 22nd goal and 43rd point of the season with 42 seconds on the clock.

Before the buzzer sounded, Ethan Sakowich and Ben McCartney went toe-to-toe, earning five-minute majors for fighting.

In the second, Dallon Melin (5th) would score to tie things up at 1-1. The goal, which came at 16:10 of the frame, was Melin’s first point since December 11 vs. Lethbridge.

Fifty-five seconds after the equalizer, Ridly Greig was given a five-minute major for goaltender interference and a game misconduct. The Rebels couldn’t capitalize.

To the third we go and it was Marcus Sekundiak (5th) scoring what stood up as the game-winner at the 11:01 mark. Brandon stayed out of the box the rest of the way, not giving Red Deer a sniff at tying things up again.

Cameron Hausinger (RD) and Duncan Pierce (BDN) were given 10-minute misconducts after the final horn.

Byron Fancy (8-11-1-1) made 21 stops in a losing effort, while his counterpart Jiri Patera (13-7-0-2) stopped 41 of 42 shots faced. Patera earned first star honours, while Burzan and Sekundiak were second and third.

Red Deer (14-22-1-3) is back at it Saturday night against Winnipeg (24-15-1-0), their second visit to Wayne Fleming Arena since the Ice relocated during the off-season. Winnipeg won the previous meeting 5-3.

Red Deer hasn’t won in regulation since a 6-2 defeat of Everett on Dec. 30, a stretch of five games; and they are 1-2-0-0 on their current five-game road trip.

Puck drop Saturday is at 6:30 MT, with the broadcast LIVE on 106.7 The Drive.
