A man accused of attempted murder during an incident in downtown Red Deer last month while out on bail may fInd out this spring whether his case has enough evidence to go to trial.

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled May 22, 2020 for Quentin Lee Strawberry, 38, of the O’Chiese First Nation.

On Dec. 2, 2019, Red Deer RCMP attended an apartment building in the city’s core and discovered a male suffering from a head injury after an alleged attack with a machete.

Mounties say a suspect was located and arrested on outstanding warrants for failure to comply with the conditions of his release which police say included a 24-hour curfew, keeping the peace and not possessing anything intended to be used as a weapon.

RCMP allege the suspect failed to comply with all conditions and was subsequently charged for breaching his release conditions on November 20, 25, and 26 of last year.

Strawberry faces charges of attempted murder, obstructing a peace officer, and six counts of breach of conditions regarding the incident.

Should the case proceed to trial, Strawberry has elected to be tried by a Queen’s Bench judge with a jury.

Strawberry was previously behind bars in relation to the death of Joseph Junior Alfred Gallant in Red Deer on Mar. 29, 2019. Strawberry faces counts of second-degree murder and assault causing bodily harm in relation to the death. He and a co-accused have a preliminary hearing scheduled for the case on Feb. 28, 2020.
