Resolution still possible for Red Deer County woman accused of killing husband

A possible resolution is still in the works for a Red Deer County woman accused of killing her husband last year.

On Monday, Court of Queen’s Bench Justice Craig M. Jones learned that the Crown is still assessing the case of Robin Berresford, 37.

She is charged with manslaughter with a firearm in the death of Matthew Berresford, who was 36 at the time of his death on Feb. 27, 2019.

That’s when Blackfalds and Red Deer RCMP responded to a disturbance at a home in Balmoral Heights and arrived to find a deceased man inside.

Following a preliminary hearing held in October of last year, Robin Berresford was ordered to stand trial on the lesser count of manslaughter with a firearm after originally being charged with first-degree murder.

Tentative trial dates have been set for May 10-21, 2021.

The latest a trial for Berresford can take place, as per the R. vs. Jordan ruling, is July 28, 2021.

Berresford’s case returns to Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on Feb. 3, where it’s anticipated a possible resolution could be reached. If not, a pre-trial conference would take place Apr. 1, ahead of the May trial.
