Red Deer Food Bank hoping more people will donate time in 2020

Jan 5, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Red Deer Food Bank is in a healthy spot after turning the calendar, but they’re hoping the community can keep up the support its given in the last year.

“We had a good Christmas. Red Deer’s always very generous when it comes to giving,” says Alice Kolisnyk, deputy director. “Dale Deveraux made his annual donation of Christmas dinners, which was also key in terms of getting everybody taken care of, and now our shelves are getting filled up again.”

The food bank helped approximately 1400 people in December, about the same as a year prior.

“Every year, Red Deer steps up to the plate and is able to keep us going,” Kolisnyk adds. “Inventories are doing alright, but we’re not at the levels we were at before the economy went south. We are certainly better than we were three months ago.”

The wish list going forward is for items like canned meats, as well as pasta, rice, beans and soup.

The food bank also accepts cash donations, which it can typically transform into more food for every dollar than the average consumer.

“People can also donate time by volunteering,” she points out. “It’s a great way to see how donations are used, whether it’s in the warehouse or at our fundraising events throughout the year.”
