DANGEROUS REMINDER

Operation Red Nose volunteers hit by possible drunk driver near Kamloops, B.C.

KAMLOOPS — A volunteer organization that offers free rides to drivers who may have been drinking ended its year with a stark reminder of why the service is so important.

RCMP say an Operation Red Nose convoy of two vehicles was giving three people a ride home just before midnight on New Year’s Eve near Kamloops, B.C.

As they travelled on the TransCanada Highway, the convoy was hit from behind by a driver in a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

After the collision, the Ram came to rest down an embankment and the driver had to be extracted from the truck.

Officers observed signs of intoxication but the 24-year-old driver refused to provide a breath sample.

RCMP issued him a 90-day Immediate Roadside Prohibition and charged with driving without due care and attention.

Red Nose spokesperson Katie Klassen says the incident is unsettling.

“Right now, everyone seems to be okay. Police and ambulance did attend the scene. Everyone was checked out, so no major injuries there,” said Klassen. “We did talk to the client and the volunteers and everyone seems to be just a little shaken, but seems to be okay.”

The suspected impaired driver sustained non-life threatening injuries in the collision.

Klassen says fortunately the incident did not cause more serious injuries.

“It’s just unfortunate that someone did not make the right decision to take an alternative ride home, and that it affected our volunteers,” said Klassen.
