Child Advocacy Centre launches 50/50 cash lottery

Dec 20, 2019 | 1:11 PM

The Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre has launched a standalone 50/50 cash lottery.

The eventual winner will take home $200,000. The same prize was part of the CACAC’s first dream home lottery last year. Tickets start at just $10 — or you can buy 10 for $25, 25 for $50, and 50 for $75.

CEO Mark Jones says money raised will push them closer to their goal of moving into a new facility near Red Deer College, as well as fund their court development program, and training for volunteers, among other initiatives.

“Our rate of cases isn’t going to go down in the foreseeable future. When we started this, we were in one community, and now we’ve had a child or family from 74 communities in central Alberta,” says Jones. “What automatically comes with that is more people understanding what we’re doing, and that (means) increased children and families who come here for support.”

In two years, the centre has served 840 families; Jones says at the beginning, they would’ve been happy to have helped 50-60 families per year. Approximately 54 per cent of their clientele are from outside the city. A whopping 71 per cent are female, and the CACAC notes that 96 per cent of children they serve know their offender.

Jones says once they get into the new facility at RDC, they plan to return to doing a home lottery.

The cash lottery deadline is March 8, 2020 at 11 p.m., with the winner being drawn on March 17. The minimum guaranteed prize is $80,000. A total of 206,250 tickets will be sold.
