ICE CREAM DELIGHTS

Cilantro & Chive supports Ècole James S. McCormick School breakfast program

RED DEER- If there’s anything that can land a smile on a face, it’s ice cream.

Cilantro & Chive served up salted caramel ice-cream between root beer float cookies to students recently at Ècole James S. McCormick School in Lacombe.

It was the second pop-up sale as part of their new Ice Cream Sandwich Program.

With the help of some grade 3 students, roughly 150 ice cream sandwiches were scooped up, all in support of the school’s new breakfast program.

Cilantro & Chive kicked off the program in September and will support a new local school every three months.

One dollar from every one of these treats sold in the restaurant is donated to the school, and until the end of February those dollars will go directly to the JS breakfast program.

Full proceeds from the pop-up sale are also being kicked back to the school.

This is the first year JS McCormick has had a formal breakfast program up and running.

It started off feeding 8-10 kids every school morning and has quickly grown to see over 60 children.

Assistant Principal Craig Fullarton says: “Many students come to school hungry simply because their morning was too busy to eat. We have students who ride the bus for an hour so although they might have eaten before they left, they may still arrive to school hungry. Our program targets anyone who needs something in their belly because realistically, if they are hungry, learning is not going to be a priority for them that day.”
