RCMP arrest stolen vehicle suspect hiding in a hay stack

Dec 9, 2019 | 1:00 PM

A 20-year-old Calgary man is facing a charge of possession of stolen property after Mounties arrested the suspected driver of a stolen vehicle who was found hiding in a hay stack in a barn near Bowden last week.

On Dec. 6 at approximately 6:00 p.m., Olds RCMP received a report of a sighting of a Jeep that had been stolen from the Olds area on the previous day.

Police say the complainant had observed the Jeep enter a ditch on Highway 587, about two miles west of Bowden.

Information was also received that the suspect may have been in possession of a firearm.

Officers from the Olds and Innisfail Detachments attended the area, as well as two Alberta Sheriffs.

Footprints were said to be observed in the snow leading away from the Jeep, so Police Dog Services were contacted, but were unavailable to immediately attend.

Police contained the area and a foot search was conducted.

After approximately an hour of searching, officers located the male suspect hiding under a hay stack in a barn approximately two miles northwest of Bowden.

The male was arrested without incident and no firearm was found as a result of the arrest or search.

The suspect was released from custody to appear in Didsbury Provincial Court on February 3.

Olds RCMP are asking the public’s assistance for any information related to this incident.
