100 Men and 100 Women raise more than $100,000 in 2019

Dec 8, 2019 | 10:00 AM

It was another successful year for Red Deer’s 100 Men and 100 Women Who Care groups which donate quarterly to various local charities.

Members take in presentations from nominated organizations, and then vote at each meeting for which charity will receive their donations.

At this month’s 100 Men meeting, the chosen charity was A Better World Canada.

“When guys see there is something that can be done locally and it’s something tangible versus some grand idea with huge budgets, it’s easier to relate to and see how my $100 stays local and is going to impact a number of kids directly,” says board member Konstantin Neykurs.

“This is one of the best things happening in Red Deer. It gets you to meet other like-minded people that care about community.”

100 Men raised a total of $23,000 this year for A Better World, Aspire Special Needs, the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre, and the Central Alberta Victim and Witness Support Society.

Meetings in 2020 are set for March 9, June 8, Sept. 14 and Dec. 7 at The Hideout in Gasoline Alley. They hope to attract at least 30-40 new members for next year’s efforts. More information is at 100MenRedDeer.com.

Meantime, 100 Women Who Care donated this year to the Salvation Army most recently, as well as Turning Point’s Women’s Program, Street Ties Youth Outreach, and the Mustard Seed’s school lunch program.

Cindy Jefferies, co-founder, says given the economy, it’s amazing that they continue to raise between $18,000 and $20,000 every quarter.

“We have had conversations about trying to bring a bit more diversity to the group. We always welcome new members, and we’d love to hit that 200 member mark again,” she says. “We just want to continue to meet the needs of local community charities, because with recent cuts, and unemployment, we recognize the need for non-profits is higher than ever.”

The first meeting of 100 Women in 2020 is set for Feb. 3 at the Red Deer Golf & Country Club. More details are at 100WomenRedDeer.ca.
