Three teens arrested for comments towards Hunting Hills High School

Restorative justice measures may be on the way for three students arrested Thursday morning at Hunting Hills High School.

Cst. Derek Turner with Red Deer RCMP says that’s the likely outcome, rather than criminal charges, after the trio was detained for making comments which implied a threat to the school.

Turner says the teens were engaged in conversation and were overheard insinuating something might happen at the school. Eventually, that conversation made its way to police, who then stepped in.

“Because of the way the world is these days, and serious things do happen involving schools, even idle chit chat can be misconstrued,” says Turner, who notes the students and their parents have been both forthcoming and cooperative.

“You just need to be careful with what you say and how you say it. We take these seriously every time. You’re potentially putting a lot of people at risk and raising levels of anxiety, and even on our end, until we figure out what’s actually going on, we’re at a higher level of vigilance.”

In a letter to parents on Thursday, Hunting Hills Principal Darwin Roscoe wrote that students and others involved in the school’s annual bike-a-thon were made aware of what had happened.

“We take matters like this extremely seriously and work closely with the RCMP, keeping in mind the safety of students and staff. At no time were staff or students in any danger and with consultation with the RCMP, the bike-a-thon continues,” he wrote.

In 2017, the school’s bike-a-thon was cancelled midway through due to a threat made towards the school on social media. The school was locked down, but no arrests were made.
