Distracted driving incident leads to two arrests by RCMP Downtown Unit

The Red Deer RCMP Downtown Patrol Unit has taken two people into custody following an incident in downtown Red Deer.

A member of the Downtown Patrol Unit was on bike patrol on the afternoon of Nov. 26 when they attempted a traffic stop on a female driver for distracted driving.

The driver fled the scene and the vehicle was later spotted by a City of Red Deer Peace Officer. The driver was arrested by the Downtown Patrol Unit.

Both driver and passenger were arrested on outstanding warrants and found in possession of suspected methamphetamine and suspected fentanyl, cash, a number of weapons, drug paraphernalia, stolen licence place and stolen government identification.

Carmen Brown, 40, of Red Deer has been charged with flight from peace officer, possession for the purpose of trafficking (two counts), possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (two counts), possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, operating a vehicle without a driver’s licence and distracted driving.

Jeremy Sanderson-Hayward, 32, of Red Deer was out on bail at the time and has now been charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking (two counts), possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000 (two counts), possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose (three counts), possession of break-in instruments, illegal possession of government documents (five counts), carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with a recognizance (three counts).

Sanderson-Hayward remains in custody and will appear in Red Deer Provincial Court on Dec. 12. Brown has been released and is set to appear on Dec. 18.

“This is an ideal example of a how a traffic stop can lead investigators to uncover other illegal activities,” said Cpl. Dwayne Hanusich, head of the Red Deer RCMP’s Downtown Patrol Unit. “The Downtown Patrol Unit is committed to putting a dent into illegal activity.”

From Sep. 30 to Nov. 3, the RCMP Downtown Unit laid 61 Criminal Code charges and issued 138 violation tickets, most of which were for Trespassing and Loitering offenses. The unit also arrested 28 individuals wanted on outstanding warrants, including a total of 65 arrest warrants with an associated 110 criminal charges during this period.
