Suspect gets away after ditching stolen vehicle in hospital parkade

Dec 2, 2019 | 3:27 PM

A suspect is at large following a police incident that climaxed near Red Deer Regional Hospital on Monday morning.

Staff Sgt. Jay Peden with Red Deer RCMP says members were called about a stolen truck around 11 a.m.

An RCMP helicopter, which was already in the area assisting with a call outside the city, aided in the search for the stolen truck.

“They assisted Red Deer Detachment with watching the vehicle, at which time it proceeded up to the parkade at the Red Deer Regional Hospital,” Peden says. “It had gone into the parkade and at that point members set up containment to hopefully identify, locate, and ultimately arrest the driver.”

The suspect got away, according to Peden, but they did locate the suspect vehicle on the parkade’s second level. The truck was on fire when it was located, but how it got that way is unknown at this time.

Police do not have a description of the suspect, but Peden adds there wasn’t and isn’t imminent danger to the public.

Normal operations have resumed at the parkade, and there was no impact on the hospital other than the public was advised to avoid the area while the events unfolded.

RCMP will release more details if and when they become available.
