Hometown boy the hero for Rebels in OT vs. Hitmen

Dec 1, 2019 | 8:25 PM

On the same weekend Hometown Hockey was in Red Deer to celebrate the game, it was a local kid that got the hometown team a big road victory.

Josh Tarzwell wristed one past Calgary Hitmen netminder Jack McNaughton 2:13 into overtime on Sunday to snap the Red Deer Rebels’ four-game losing skid.

On an even more positive note, it was the Rebels who came back in this game from two goals down, the first of which came just 1:34 into the game from Carson Focht, his 15th.

And then…

Following a 45-minute delay to tidy the teddies, neither team found the scoreboard again until 46 seconds into the third, Riley Stotts scoring his 11th to give the home team a 2-0 lead at the Saddledome.

And finally, the Rebels came alive, Joel Sexsmith notching his first as a Rebel at 2:04. Brett Davis and Chris Douglas got the helpers.

Then, at the 7:12 mark, Cameron Hausinger scored his second third period goal in as many games to get the game back to square.

To much joy for Rebels players and fans alike, Josh Tarzwell completed the comeback to give Red Deer just their fourth win in the last 12 games. They’ve also won four of their last 10 on the road.

Byron Fancy stopped 29 of 31 shots, while McNaughton made 22 saves on 25 shots faced. The Rebels went 0/5 on the powerplay, while Calgary was 0/3.

Red Deer now moves into a tie with Moose Jaw for third in the eastern wild card race at 19 points. Calgary, in the first wild card spot, has 32 points, while Brandon has 25.

Red Deer is back at it this Wednesday with a home matchup against those same Moose Jaw Warriors starting at 7 p.m.
