Tough night for Red Deer against Hurricanes

Rebels blown out 11-2 at home against Hurricanes

Nov 24, 2019 | 10:42 AM

The Lethbridge Hurricanes controlled and dominated the Rebels in a 11-2 win Saturday in Red Deer.

Red Deer chased the game very early when the Lethbridge Hurricanes got themselves on the board in the first period. Hurricanes defenseman Koletrane Wilson joined the rush where he was fed a nice pass from teammate Noah Boyko and took it to the net. Finding the puck in his feet, Wilson put the first shot past Ethan Anders for a 1-0 Hurricanes lead. A pinching Joel Sexsmith in the Hurricane zone would lead to a 2-on-1 the other way for Lethbridge where Noah Boyko picked the corner short-side on Anders to make it 2-0.

32 seconds following the Hurricanes second goal, the flood gates opened. A shot from the left side went off the left pad of Anders where it kicked out to D-Jay Jerome and he made no mistake by burying the rebound for a 3-0 lead.

Things got worse for Red Deer nearing the end of the first. Buffalo Sabres prospect Dylan Cozens was fed a beauty of a pass across the crease to tap it into an open net, making it 4-0 19:35 into the first. Ten seconds later and with only 15 seconds left in the period, Jerome sniped his second of the night past Fancy for an incredible 5-0 lead after one period of play.

Things kept getting worse for Red Deer as the Rebels went to the penalty box for the third time of the night to give a good powerplay team another chance to increase the lead. Calen Addison put his shot on display with a hard wrister through traffic that beat Fancy top corner to make it 6-0.

Red Deer finally responded when Cam Hausinger found himself with the puck in front of the net when he fired one past Bryan Thomson to get the Rebels on the board.

Discipline continued to hurt Red Deer as they went back to the sin bin for the fourth time of the night. Calen Addison once more let a rocket of a slap shot go that picked the top left corner to make it 7-1. Justin Hall got a breakaway late in the second where he let it go up high and past the Rebels goaltender for an 8-1 lead.

The Hurricanes kept stoking the fire with a goal from Logan Barlage 42 seconds into the third period to make it 9-1 Lethbridge. Addison would finish the hat-trick finding himself in his sweet spot at the top of the slot and once again, his hard shot sniped the corner of the net to make it 10-1.

Unfortunately for Red Deer, they had a lot of penalty trouble in the third giving the Hurricanes their eighth powerplay of the night. Trevor Thurston let a cannon of a one-timer go bar-down for an 11-1 lead.

The Rebels were the last to score before time expired in Saturday night’s game with a shot at the top of the slot let go by Ethan Sakowich that snuck through the five hole of Thomson.

The Hurricanes saw nine powerplay opportunities Saturday with three goals on the man advantage. Red Deer was shut out on all four powerplay looks they had. Final shots in the game were 37-28 favouring the Hurricanes. Red Deer has now allowed 18 goals against and only three for in the last two games.

Red Deer will look to bounce back Tuesday night when they visit the Swift Current Broncos. Listen for the Bo’s Bar and Stage Pre-Game Show at 5:50, with puck drop at 6 p.m. on 106.7 The Drive.
