RDC rec program looks to join Canadian College Baseball Conference

Nov 23, 2019 | 11:37 AM

The Red Deer College Rec Royals are attempting to join the Canadian College Baseball Conference (CCBC).

Trent Rix, Director, Ancillary and Sport Services, says these are very early days, but the league has granted unanimous approval to move forward with a proposal.

The CCBC is currently comprised seven teams from Okanagan College, Prairie Baseball Academy, Thompson Rivers University, University of Calgary, Vancouver Island University, University of the Fraser Valley, and Edmonton Collegiate. Teams play a season which goes from late March to early May.

Rix describes the competitive rec format of athletics as ‘pay to play,’ and is completely separate from the base-funded Kings and Queens programs.

“If the proposal for a new team is accepted, the team could begin playing as early as the fall of 2020,” he says. “If approved, this program would create the opportunity for local baseball athletes to remain in our community and continue to compete and advance their education as an RDC student.”

A team at the college would also add to the complement of baseball recently and soon to be infused into the central Alberta region.

In Sept. 2018, a new baseball and softball academy launched at St. Joseph High School in Red Deer, and Sylvan Lake was approved in October for a franchise in the Western Canadian Baseball League, and will start play in 2021.

The Red Deer Riggers also recently announced they”ll be hosting the Men’s National Championships in 2021 at Great Chief Park.

The RDC Royals have existed for 15 years, and currently host teams for rodeo, dance and soccer. The program has approximately 100 students.
