Rebels blasted 7-1 by Prince Albert

Nov 21, 2019 | 9:42 AM

The Prince Albert Raiders proved once again why they are the best team in the WHL Eastern Conference with a dominating 7-1 victory over the Red Deer Rebels Wednesday night at the Westerner Park Centrium.

It was a tough break for the Rebels late in the first period when Kaiden Guhle let a shot go from the right circle that ricocheted off of Dawson Barteaux’s shin pad and into the back of the net. The Raiders led 1-0 after one period of play.

Just shy of half-way into the second period, Prince Albert found the back of the net again as Justin Nachbaur put home a rebound for a 2-0 edge.

Momentum was swinging the Raiders way and not much later, Prince Albert attempted a wraparound that was denied originally by Rebels goalie Ethan Anders. But with his back to the play the Raiders banged away at it and found the back of the net for a 3-0 cushion heading into the third period.

The Raiders picked up right where they left off in the final frame. Spencer Moe scored on a power play to make it 4-0. Jakob Brook sniped one to make it 5-0.

Aliaksei Protas put his elite shot on display when he skated down the left wing and wired one off the far post and in to make it 6-0.

Evan Herman ripped a shot that beat Anders high glove side for Prince Albert’s final goal on the night.

Jayden Grubbe spoiled the shutout bid when he sniped a hard wrist shot high short side on Raiders goalie Boston Bilous for a 7-1 final score.

Bilous had a fantastic overall in stopping 24 out of the 25 shots he faced. Ethan Anders stopped 23 out of 30 shots that were fired his way.

Prince Albert did a good job on their powerplay going 2-for-5. Meanwhile Red Deer were blanked on their six powerplay attempts.

“Outside of two lines we had no emotion, no life in the last four to five minutes of the second period,” Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter lamented. “When we got some action in their zone it was all just work, being competitive and working.”

Red Deer will head back to the drawing board and get set for a showdown on Saturday night when they welcome the Lethbridge Hurricanes to town. Catch all the action on 106.7 The Drive with the pre-game show beginning at 6:30 and puck drop at 7 p.m.
