Weekly recap: Nov. 14-16

RED DEER- It was another exciting week of competition. The Hockey Queens downed the Olds College Broncos in both games.

The Red Deer College Kings Hockey team defeated the Portage College Voyageurs twice.

The RDC Queens Volleyball squad picked up a pair of match wins over the Medicine Hat College Rattlers.

The Volleyball Kings split their weekend series with the Rattlers.

The RDC Queens Basketball team finished 1-1 and the Basketball Kings come up a bit short in two contests, but did push the undefeated Kodiaks to overtime in one of them.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Queens Basketball | Friday, Nov. 15 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens defeated the Ambrose University Lions 79-63. Amy Szymanek contributed 19 points, 12 rebounds and four steals in the win.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, Nov. 16 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens (4-2) got down in the first quarter against the Lethbridge College Kodiaks (4-3) and couldn’t close the deficit. The Kodiaks picked up a 72-67 decision. Britney Peters totaled 17 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and an assist for RDC.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Nov.15 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Kings had a 28 point fourth quarter, but couldn’t complete the rally against the Ambrose University Lions. The Lions grabbed an 89-86 win. Tyronn King accumulated 16 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, Nov.16 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Kings (3-3) pushed the undefeated Lethbridge College Kodiaks (7-0) into overtime, but the Kodiaks eventually captured the contest 96-85. Red Deer’s Spencer Klassen stacked up 28 points, 12 rebounds and two steals for the Kings.

Queens Hockey | Thursday, Nov. 14 | Olds College

The RDC Queens defeated the Broncos 4-1 in Olds. RDC’s Neisha Germann scored two goals. Tyra Anderson and Mary Hirsch added singles. Queens goaltender Madison Fox made 23 saves.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Nov. 16 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In double overtime, the first place Queens (8-1-1-0) won 3-2 over the Broncos (1-7-2-0). Sydney Rowley scored her first goal in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) and assisted on her sister Brooklyn’s game winner. Neisha Germann opened the scoring for the Queens. RDC netminder Karlee Fetch turned aside 14 shots, earning the win.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Nov. 15 | Portage College

The Hockey Kings had many contributors in a dominating 8-3 win over the Portage College Voyageurs. Ross Heidt scored two shorthanded goals. Scott Ferguson connected twice on the power play. Chance Longjohn, Kyle Salaway, Ryley Smith and Chase Thudium rounded out the scoring. Kings goalie Nathan Alalouf made 22 saves for the win.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Nov. 16 | Portage College

In an afternoon rematch, the second place RDC Kings (8-1-1-0) defeated the Voyageurs (0-9-1-0) by a score of 5-2. Austin Hunter, Tyler Podgorenko and Scott Ferguson connected on the power play. Jantzen Leslie and Podgorenko added even strength goals. Netminder Arik Weersink stopped 19 shots.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Nov. 15 | Medicine Hat College

The Queens defeated the Rattlers in four sets (25-15, 29-27, 17-25 and 25-19). Middle Alexandria Greenshields had 13 kills and five stuff blocks. Libero Kaylee Domoney accumulated 26 digs and two assists in the road victory.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, Nov. 16 | Medicine Hat College

The third place Queens (6-2) downed the Medicine Hat College Rattlers (4-6) in four sets (25-23, 25-14, 20-25 and 25-17). Queens outside hitter Tess Pearman led the offence with 14 kills. Kaylee Domoney added 20 digs, three assists and one kill.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Nov. 15 | Medicine Hat College

The RDC Kings roared back from a two set deficit against the Rattlers, eventually winning the match in five (23-25, 22-25, 25-20, 28-26 and 15-10). First-year Carter Hills got on a roll, pounding 27 kills. Setter Thomas Wass had 54 assists.

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, Nov. 16 | Medicine Hat College

The Rattlers (2-8) downed the third place Kings (6-2) in four sets (25-21, 27-25, 21-25 and 25-20). Carter Hills had 13 kills. Mark DeWit added seven. Adelaide, Australia’s Thomas Wass totaled 33 assists, seven digs and two kills.
