City to recognize Transgender Day of Remembrance

Nov 18, 2019 | 2:35 PM

Wednesday is the Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDoR), held annually to shed light on violence against those who are transgender.

It began in 1999 as a vigil to honour the memory of Rita Hester, a transgender woman murdered in 1998 in Massachusetts.

In Red Deer, TANAS (Trans and Non-Binary Aid Society) is hosting an event from 6-8 p.m.on Wednesday at the Red Deer Funeral Home and Crematorium. The event, featuring reflection time and speeches followed by a social, is open to the public.

“This is a day for us to come together and reflect upon the small moments in life, the ones we don’t think about all too often, but once life is gone those are the moments we wish would last forever,” says Bobbi-Jo L’Hirondelle, board chair for TANAS (Trans and Non-Binary Aid Society).
