Riggers to host Men’s National Championships in 2021

Nov 10, 2019 | 11:40 AM

For the first time in 27 years, the Baseball Canada Men’s National Championships will return to Alberta.

The 2021 edition will be played at Great Chief Park in Red Deer, which happens to be one of just two Alberta cities to host the tournament since 1969. Camrose hosted in 1972, while Red Deer hosted in 1987 and 1994.

Long-time Red Deer Rigger Jaret Chatwood says securing the tournament for this city is a huge thrill.

“Everyone is excited. It’s a good chance for us to showcase what Alberta baseball is all about to the rest of the country,” he says.

“At the very least, there are 10 teams with 21 guys per team. Everyone will be eating out, plus the social part of it,” he says of the expected impact on the local economy. “Our experience in the past is that peoples’ families come out too.”

Exact dates are yet to be determined, but the tournament will take place in late August 2021, with the Riggers receiving a spot as host team.

Red Deer won national silver in 1986 in Moncton, NB, bronze in 1988 in Corner Brook, NL, silver in 1990 in St. John’s, NL, gold in 1997 in Mount Pearl, NL, and bronze in 2017 in Victoria, BC.
