Legacy of Red Deer rock climber to live on through new climbing wall

Nov 8, 2019 | 12:30 PM

Family and friends of a young rock climber from Red Deer is hoping the community will pitch in for the construction of a legacy project in his honour.

Lucas Chabot, who was 21, passed away after suffering a heart attack during a climbing competition earlier this month in Calgary.

Chabot played lacrosse with the Red Deer Chiefs until he was 16, stopping after the death of his father to cancer, according to GoFundMe.

In 2016, he took up rock climbing after trying the climbing wall at the Collicutt Centre. He then teamed up with Kurtis Paul to open Trailhead Climbing and Fitness in Gasoline Alley.

At the time of his passing, he was ranked ninth in the Alberta Climbing Association’s open male category in bouldering.

Chabot was registered for upgrading classes this winter at Red Deer College, and had aspirations to attend university and study software/robotics engineering. He was also an avid fly fisherman and once gutted and restored a Mitsubishi Delica using his self-taught knowledge of automotive procedures.

The GoFundMe campaign is for the purpose of building a new climbing wall at Trailhead in his memory. It has raised about $2500 after one day.

A celebration of life is happening Nov. 16 at Trailhead Climbing and Fitness (33 Mckenzie Cres., Red Deer County).
