Rebels lose in first trip to Winnipeg

Nov 6, 2019 | 9:23 PM

The Red Deer Rebels made their first ever visit to Winnipeg on Wednesday to battle the ICE for the first time since their move from Cranbrook.

Unfortunately, the Rebels’ maiden voyage to the Manitoba capital ended on a sour note in the form of a 5-3 loss in front of 1,238 fans at the Wayne Fleming Arena.

Michal Teply opened the scoring for Winnigeg 3:51 into the game. Brad Ginnell doubled the ICE lead by scoring with one second left in the period.

Ethan Sakowich got the Rebels on the board with his fourth goal of the season on a powerplay 1:02 into period two.

But Mike Ladyman scored his first goal of the season at the 13:44 mark of the middle frame to restore Winnipeg’s two-goal advantage.

The Rebels charged out of the gate to start the third period and tied the game 3-3 on Brett Davis’s fifth goal of the year at 1:14 and Jaxsen Wiebe’s third at 2:15.

However, the home side restored their two-goal lead again with two quick goals of their own from Michal Teply at the 11:31 and 12:35 marks. It would prove to be the difference as neither team found the back of the net the rest of the way.

Ethan Anders was back in net for Red Deer and made 41 saves on the night. Dean McNabb made 24 saves to earn the win for Winnipeg.

Red Deer was 1-for-2 on the powerplay while Winnipeg was 1-for-6.

The Rebels head to Saskatoon where they’ll take on the Blades Friday night at 6 p.m. (106.7 THE DRIVE).
