RADON SCREENING

Radon Screening Kits available at Red Deer Public Library

Nov 6, 2019 | 5:38 AM

RED DEER- Radon Screening Kits will soon be available to borrow from the Red Deer Public Library (RDPL), thanks to a joint effort between the library and the Alberta Lung Association.

Radon is a cancer causing radioactive gas emitted naturally from the ground, explains Briana Ehnes, Manager of RDPL Adult Services.

“Exposure to high levels of radon can increase the risk of developing lung cancer, so we encourage everyone to borrow a kit from the library and screen their home.”

The gas can get in a house through basement floors, concrete cracks, wall joints or other openings.

The gas is invisible, tasteless and odourless and if high levels are present in a home it can be dangerous.

The kit is easy to use and also contains information homeowners can refer to for help and further testing if radon is present.

A library card is required to take a screening kit home, and since memberships are free, the kits are easily accessible for all Red Deer residents.

The public are invited to learn more on November 7 at 11 a.m. on Level 2 of the Downtown Branch.

Patricia Stobbe from the Alberta Lung Association, Andrew Heshka, Regional Radiation Specialist for Health Canada and Shelley Ross, CEO of RDPL will be at the launch to explain the kits and answer questions.
