A hockey player and basketball player have been named this week’s Red Deer College Athletics Bedford Food Company Athletes of the Week.

College officials say opponents are finding it extremely difficult to outwork Sandra Garcia-Bernal. In the Queens Basketball team’s only game this past weekend, the third-year guard contributed 15 points, 13 rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 76-60 road victory over the St. Mary’s University Lightning.

The five-foot-five guard energetically played all 40 minutes and was effective in all aspects of the Queens’ win. The hard-working student-athlete from Spain connected on 50 per cent of her shots from the field and three-of-four from the free-throw line.

The Kinesiology student has played a key role in the Queens’ 2-1 record against some tough opponents.

With Garcia-Bernal’s anticipation and skill, she ranks fifth in Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball rebounding with 10.7 boards per game.

On the ice, Tyler Podgorenko had a fantastic weekend for the Kings, contributing three points and helping RDC earn a pair of victories over the Concordia University Thunder.

In Friday’s 5-1 win, the third-year defender assisted on Chase Thudium’s opening goal. Then on Saturday, the Instrumentation Engineering Technician student assisted on the Kings’ tying goal and scored the insurance goal, in a 4-2 home decision.

He was also named the Collegiate Sports Medicine Kings Player-of-the-Game at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre.

Podgorenko has played a well-rounded game this season, with effective defensive coverage while contributing offensively. The talented blue liner from Nelson leads all ACAC defencemen and shares second spot in overall league scoring with 10 points in only eight games.

With the two weekend victories, Podgorenko and the Kings (6-1-1-0) sit in top spot in the league with 13 points.
