Blackfalds RCMP remind motorists to slow down on icy roads

RCMP and Alberta Transportation are warning motorists to avoid any travel on the QEII between Red Deer and Ponoka.

Mounties say a semi tractor trailer unit jackknifed north of Highway 12 this afternoon with all northbound traffic being detoured through Lacombe and onto Highway 2A.

In addition, police say there are at least 10 vehicles which have gone into the ditch due to the icy road conditions.

Alberta Transportation reports they have several sanding trucks working in the area between Red Deer and Ponoka in an effort to improve the driving conditions.

However, the sanding trucks can only work as quickly as the road conditions allow.

Earlier on Tuesday, snowy, windy weather and icy road conditions resulted in several vehicles sliding off Red Deer and Blackfalds area highways throughout the morning.

One incident involved a school bus that left Highway 11 westbound and rolled into the median west of Red Deer. No students were on board the bus when the crash happened a little after 8:30 a.m.

Police are telling motorists to slow down, drive for conditions and check 511 Alberta to review your route.
