Rebels skid at 7 games with 5-2 loss to Warriors

Nov 1, 2019 | 10:24 PM

The Red Deer Rebels were beaten, victimized and conquered Friday night by the 2018/19 WHL Rookie of the Year in what was ultimately a 5-2 loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors.

Brayden Tracey notched his 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th goals of the season, including three before Red Deer could get on the board.

Tracey got the party started 94 seconds into the middle frame, and then 2:08 later scored again, this time on the powerplay to make it 2-0.

At 14:07, White Rock, B.C.’s Matthew Benson scored his 2nd of the year, and it was 3-0 Warriors after 40 minutes.

Just 1:12 into the third, Tracey got the hat trick, and once again on the powerplay, the 18-year-old’s 4th with the man advantage this season.

Under a minute later, Chris Douglas finally gave Red Deer some hope, scoring his 4th from Brett Davis and Keaton Sorensen.

Red Deer scored again at the 5:47 mark of the third, Moose Jaw native Jaxsen Wiebe netting the 2nd of his rookie season.

But that was as close as the Rebels would come as Tracey sealed the deal with an empty netter with the clock winding down.

Tracey now has eight goals and eight assists this season in eight games played.

With the loss, Red Deer is now winless in seven straight. They did pick up extra points in shootout losses to Seattle and Regina along the way, however. They’re also 1-5-0-2 away from the Westerner Park Centrium.

One bright spot from Friday was Red Deer outshooting Moose Jaw 38-17, but they came up against a hot goalie getting his first start of the season in veteran Adam Evanoff.

Ethan Anders (starter) and Byron Fancy shared the net for Red Deer.

The Rebels (4-8-0-2) are back at it Sunday afternoon in Regina (2-11-1-0). Puck drop is at 3 p.m. and the game can be heard LIVE on 106.7 The Drive.
