Poppy Campaign

Local Legion Starts Remembrance Day Poppy Campaign

Oct 31, 2019 | 12:23 PM

Residents will be seeing poppy trays displayed in businesses around Drayton Valley over the next week as the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 269 has launched their poppy campaign, which runs until Remembrance Day on November 11.

The Legion has been doing the campaign for years, as a way of giving back to veterans and raising awareness about the importance of remembering those who served in war. People can pick a poppy from the tray to wear after leaving a donation.

President of Drayton Valley’s Legion, Bill Cavanagh, says the funds from the tray go towards different local programs.

“The donation goes in there and that poppy goes into a trust fund that’s administered locally when needed or requested,” he explains. “The funds that we raise and the awareness we raise goes towards promoting remembrance of the service that our veterans have provided in the past and aiding those veterans and future veterans with assistance should they require it in years to come.”

Cavanagh added that this year the Legion has provided $10,000 to the Drayton Valley Cadet Squadron, $17,000 to the Drayton Valley Health Foundation for the purchase of a heart monitor for the emergency department, $10,000 to the Kipnes Centre for Veterans, and $5,000 to the Legion’s Service Bureau.

The Legion will hold their Remembrance Ceremony on November 11, starting at 10:45 with a parade to an outdoor ceremony of laying the wreaths. This will be followed by an indoor ceremony of speeches by guest speakers. A lunch will follow the ceremony after the noon hour.
