Weekly recap: October 24-27

RED DEER- The RDC Kings Soccer team earned silver at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship.

The RDC Kings Cross Country Running team captured gold and the Queens took silver at the ACAC Championships.

The Queens Basketball team won against the SAIT Trojans.

The Basketball Kings dropped their home game to the Trojans.

The Hockey Kings split their weekend series with the NAIT Ooks and the Queens Hockey team defeated the SAIT Trojans twice.

The RDC Kings & Queens Volleyball teams downed the Ambrose University Lions in a pair of matches.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week in RDC Athletics:

Kings Soccer | Friday, Oct. 25 | ACAC Championship | NAIT

The Red Deer College Kings defeated the Concordia University Thunder 2-1 in the quarter-finals. Pedro Humberto Mourao Neto and Nathan Swartz scored for RDC.

Kings Soccer | Saturday, Oct. 26 | ACAC Championship | NAIT

In the semi-finals, the RDC Kings and SAIT Trojans were even 1-1 after 90 minutes and the Kings eventually won on penalty kicks. RDC’s Turner Johnson scored during regulation time.

Kings Soccer | Sunday, Oct. 27 | ACAC Championship | NAIT

The RDC Kings earned ACAC silver after dropping a close 2-0 contest to the Lethbridge College Kodiaks. Both teams earned berths in the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer National Championship in Oshawa, Ontario starting November 6. This is the first time the RDC Kings will play for national soccer gold. Durham College is hosting the event.

Cross Country Running | Saturday, Oct. 26 | ACAC Championships | SAIT

The RDC Kings won ACAC gold and the Queens silver. Shayla Sklaruk (24:42) captured individual bronze and made the ACAC Women’s Cross Country Running All-Conference team. Daniel Szucs (27:48) and Devin Saunders (28:26) earned spots on the ACAC Men’s Cross Country Running All-Conference team. Szucs was fourth and Saunders finished seventh. Both teams have qualified for the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships in Grande Prairie on Saturday, November 9.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Oct. 25 | Ambrose University

In Calgary, the RDC Queens defeated the Ambrose University Lions in five sets (23-25, 27-25, 21-25, 25-23 and 15-12). Setter Emma Letkeman accumulated 56 assists and outside hitter Emma Holmes pounded 29 kills.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, Oct. 26 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In their home opener, the Queens (2-2) downed the Lions in three sets (25-19, 25-22 and 25-20). RDC’s Tess Pearman totaled 16 kills, 10 digs and one ace in the win.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Oct. 25 | Ambrose University

RDC swept Ambrose University (25-22, 25-14 and 25-21). Cody Boulding accumulated 10 kills, one ace and one dig.

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, Oct. 26 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Kings (3-1) picked up a four set victory over the Lions (16-25, 25-21, 25-14 and 25-20). Patrik Toze had 12 kills, three digs, one stuff block, one ace and one assist.

Queens Basketball | Friday, Oct. 25 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Basketball Queens (1-1) earned a 67-46 victory over the SAIT Trojans (0-2). Sandra Garcia-Bernal contributed nine points, 13 rebounds, three steals and one assist for RDC.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Oct. 25 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The shorthanded RDC Kings (1-1) dropped a 93-82 game to the SAIT Trojans (2-0). Tyronn King had 24 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and one steal for RDC.

Queens Hockey | Friday, Oct. 25 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens defeated the Trojans 4-3. Tyra Anderson and Braxtyn Shawara scored singles. Camryn Wallan struck on the power play and added the game-winning goal for the RDC Queens.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Oct. 26 | 7:00 p.m. | SAIT

The second place Red Deer College Queens (4-0) won 4-3 over the SAIT Trojans. Mary Hirsch scored a pair of goals. Neisha Germann and Tyra Anderson recorded singles.

Kings Hockey | Thursday, Oct. 24 | NAIT

The RDC Kings dropped the road contest 4-1 to the NAIT Ooks. Mathieu Lapointe scored the lone Kings’ goal on the power play.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Oct. 26 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a rematch, the second place Kings (4-1-1-0) defeated the Ooks 4-3. Chase Thudium scored twice. Tyler Podgorenko and Kyle Salaway tallied once. Arik Weersink made 31 saves for the win.
