INNISFAIL- Chinook’s Edge School Division acknowledged dozens of long-serving staff and welcomed 20 new teachers at its annual Celebrations event on October 24.

Co-hosted by the Board of Trustees and the Alberta Teachers’ Association, the evening honoured all employee groups at every level across the division.

It began with the induction of 20 new teachers and ended with a tribute to 43 retirees, many of whom have spent their entire careers in Chinook’s Edge.

“Our Board is very grateful to our staff and we are always pleased to honour them in this way,” said Allan Tarnoczi, Board Chair. “We want to thank our staff for moving the division forward and for always putting students first. No matter their role, each of our staff serve students and families extremely well.”

Tributes were extended to staff who have made significant contributions during their time with Chinook’s Edge, including a posthumous presentation of the Roy E. Cope Award to the late Jim Brittain, who was a long-serving Educational Assistant at Innisfail High.

“This year’s Roy E. Cope Award was actually announced last May, because our recipient was in the final stages of his battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease and we wanted to be sure he knew about this award – and how highly we all thought of him – before he passed,” said Superintendent Kurt Sacher. “Many staff, students and families in all three Innisfail schools are grateful for his deep devotion to students. Over his 20 years, Jim’s impact was felt well beyond the Innisfail community and everyone had a great deal of affection for him.”

Also at the event, a number of staff were recognized for their long service in Chinook’s Edge.

This year, the Board honoured Alex Caush, who has been a bus driver in the Sundre area for 45 year.

He was also honoured as one of this year’s retirees.
